1st Labuan International Swimming Championship

The First Labuan International Swimming Championship was successfully organised by Labuan International School on 19 & 20 November 2016 with 318 swimmers from Borneo region participated in this championship!


There were 20 swimming teams/clubs from Labuan, Sabah, Sarawak, West Malaysia, Brunei and Philippines arrived Labuan on 18 November for this first ever international meet organised by the school since its swimming pool launched earlier this year. The turns-out rate with approx. 400 swimmers, parents and officials was very encouraging. 

The championship started from 8am on 19 November and ended at 2pm on 20 November with 150 events and the total of 270 heats conducted within that 2 days. This championship was supported by LabuanFSA, followed by Gold sponsors: TOS Logistic and Shipping Sdn Bhd, Mariner Hotel Labuan, Aewon Garment & Embroidery, and Thirteen K Trading Sdn Bhd. Other contributors were: Tourism Malaysia, Labuan Corporation, Nestle, Alpha Testing Services Sdn Bhd, Shermadef, CIMB Bank Berhad Labuan Offshore branch, AMS Trust Company Limited, Labuan Liberty Port Management, Fast Global Link Services Sdn Bhd, and Anonymous Art. The organiser would like to acknowledge each and every sponsors, LIS staff, parents, students, officials and volunteers that made this event successful.

Malaysia University Sports Council (MASUM) became with overall champion with 29 Gold, 13 Silver and 8 Bronze in the individual events, followed by Persatuan Renang Penampang (PREPS) of 25 Gold, 16 Silver, 19 Bronze, and Kelab Renang Akuatik PJMS (Sandakan) of 16 Gold, 16 Silver and 16 Bronze. Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC) came up at the fourth place with 13 Gold, 9 Silver, 6 Bronze in Individual and Group Relay events.

The swimmers from MASUM won the best boy swimmers and best girls swimmers in Open Category (Boy: Ng Kee Nain, 2 Gold and 3 Silver; Girl: Tham Khai Xin, 7Gold) and Group 1 (Boy: Alex Tiong Sie Heng, 8 Gold, 3Silver and 4 Bronze; Girl: Heng Khor Jin, 6Gold and 1Silver). Group 2 Best boy won by Gerard Tsen (PJMS, 5Gold and 2 Silver), Best Girl won by Ilyani Shairah (PREPS, 8Gold and 1 Silver). Group 3 Best boy swimmer is Jeremy William (PREPS, 4 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze) and Best Girl swimmer is Lee Wei Len (VSA, 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze). Group 4 Best Boy swimmer is Jay Lo Vui Seng (PJMS, 8 Gold and 1 Silver) and Best Girl Swimmer is Sharifah Destinee Dickerson (PREPS, 3 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze). Group 5 Best boy swimmer is Tom Parrot (4 Gold and 1 Silver) and Girl Kayley Goh, 4 Gold and 2 Silver), both of them are representing Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC). 

Labuan International School as the host also bagged 2Gold, 9Silver and 13 Bronze. This is the first time the swimming team participated in this international meet since the swimming team established this year under Head Swimming Coach Clement David. This result is very significant and meaningful for the young swimmers.
